Following damage or decay, a crown is a common dental treatment that restores the form and function of the tooth. A dental crown is a custom made cap that replaces the top of a tooth that otherwise has a healthy root.
Made from porcelain, resin, ceramic, gold or non-precious metal alloys, a crown can restore the appearance and function of a damaged tooth. The crown stabilises and strengthens the tooth as well as prevents further damage.
Eating becomes more comfortable and you will be able to smile with confidence.
If your dentist recommends a dental crown treatment, they will start by numbing the area around the tooth with a local anaesthetic.
Damaged and decayed parts of the tooth are removed. Then the strongest, healthy part of the tooth is prepared to support the crown.
Dental impressions are then taken which will be used to custom-make a crown that fits exactly over the prepared tooth. Depending on the chosen material, a dental crown can be closely matched in shape and colour to the original tooth, making it virtually invisible.
A temporary crown can be fitted while the permanent crown is being prepared.
At your next appointment, the new crown will be permanently fixed into place on the prepared tooth.
Dental crowns can often last for 15 years or longer.
If you have an existing crown that becomes loose, or that you are unhappy with for aesthetic reasons, contact the practice at Smile in London. A new crown can potentially improve your quality of life through improved eating comfort, better oral health and a full smile.
